Two Ways to Make a Keyboard Easier to Clean
Standard computer keyboards are inherently difficult to clean. Every keyboard contains dozens of moving keys surrounded by narrow gaps where dirt, liquids and other contaminants can collect.
In clinical and hygiene-sensitive environments, there are two common approaches:
- replace the conventional keyboard with a specialist washable keyboard; or
- fit a precision-moulded cover over the existing keyboard.
Both can be effective. The best choice depends on the application.
Advantages of Washable Keyboards
Dedicated washable keyboards are designed specifically for environments requiring frequent cleaning.
Depending on the design, advantages can include:
- sealed construction;
- resistance to liquids;
- simplified surfaces;
- suitability for frequent cleaning;
- fewer openings where contamination can accumulate.
They can be an excellent solution where very intensive cleaning is required.
The principal disadvantage is cost. Replacing a large number of existing keyboards can be expensive, and some fully sealed designs also have a typing feel that differs considerably from a conventional keyboard.
Advantages of Precision-Fit Keyboard Covers
A keyboard cover takes a different approach.
Instead of replacing the keyboard, a thin protective membrane is moulded to fit directly over it.
SteriType precision-fit covers follow the individual contours of the keys and remain fitted during normal typing.
This means organisations can retain their existing keyboards while gaining a much smoother, easier-to-clean exposed surface.
Other advantages include:
- substantially lower replacement cost;
- quick installation;
- familiar keyboard layout and typing characteristics;
- protection against dirt, dust and accidental spills;
- straightforward replacement of the cover when necessary.
What About Universal Keyboard Covers?
Not all keyboard covers are the same.
Loose universal covers have to accommodate many different keyboard shapes and therefore cannot follow the key contours accurately.
SteriType covers are moulded for individual keyboard models. This helps the material remain closely fitted to the keyboard and provides better definition of individual keys.
Which Is More Cost Effective?
Where an organisation already owns suitable keyboards, fitting precision covers can be significantly more economical than replacing complete keyboards.
This can be particularly attractive for:
- dental practices;
- medical clinics;
- laboratories;
- food production facilities;
- shared workstations;
- educational environments.
A specialist washable keyboard may still be preferable where exceptionally intensive cleaning or a completely sealed input device is required.
For many normal clinical workstations, however, a precision-fit cover provides a simple way of making the existing keyboard considerably easier to clean.
The Right Solution Depends on the Application
There is no single answer for every environment.
The important question is whether the keyboard can be cleaned effectively, regularly and in accordance with the organisation’s infection-control procedures.
If retaining conventional keyboards is desirable, a precision-fit keyboard cover can provide a simple and economical solution.
